The SME Excellence in Manufacturing Training award honors a manufacturer who demonstrates an exceptional commitment and dedication to upskilling the workforce, enhancing talent, and preparing new and incumbent employees for a successful career in the manufacturing industry.
Specifically, this award honors a manufacturer who implements best practices for reducing the skills gap and for building a high-performance workforce:
- Training programs tie directly to the bottom line
- Performance-based competency models are defined
- Learning solutions are aligned with business and job needs to develop required knowledge and skills
- Formalized training and structured on-the-job training (OJT) programs are established
- Training effectiveness is measured, and training is modified as necessary to provide a positive impact on employee and organizational performance
CRITERIA
Each application will be judged on an organization’s demonstration of the following criteria:
1. ALIGNMENT TO BUSINESS STRATEGY
A management oversight body (e.g., a committee or group) has clearly documented, communicated and mandated program policies and procedures that include roles definition with respect to oversight and execution of a training and development program aligned to your business strategy.
2. JOB DEFINITION
A best application approach to job study has resulted in the output of training and development programs for each department/role, offering sequential career development opportunities, leading workers to success in their current and future roles within the workplace.
3. CURRICULUM (ALIGNMENT AND ARTICULATION)
Innovative and effective approaches to building manufacturing curriculum, instruction and facilitation to drive a worker’s successful completion of a training and development program and complete their transition to high performance in their current job or other roles within the organization.
4. QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION
Audience-specific bundling, development and delivery of curriculum is presented to workers through best application in adult learning theory, course development and the delivery of on-the-job hands-on training to develop a worker effectively and efficiently toward job role competence.
5. TRAINING INFRASTRUCTURE AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
System of learning distribution, data collection and program evaluation providing the information necessary for program review, development and continuous improvement in terms of building capability, filling organizational gaps and gauging employee acceptance.
6. ASSESSMENT AND VALIDATION
Systematic, repeatable, defined and measurable qualification of workers to verify they possess and retain the knowledge and skill requirements of the job through strong alignment to defined job competencies and unbiased assessment by evaluations.
